Running the Tool in DirectX Mode

TWL ManualEditor must run in DirectX mode to run fast enough to make manual-related work practical.

(Running in DirectX mode makes use of DirectX, which allows the program to render the data quickly.)

The performance of your computer's graphics chip has a significant effect on DirectX operations.

Due to the variety of hardware that is available for graphics chips, we have not been able to verify operation in all environments.

Graphics Chips for Which Operation Has Been Confirmed

So far, we have confirmed that the following graphics chips allow for practical operation of the software.

- NVIDIA Quadro FX series (or equivalent)

This graphics card supports hardware vertex and lighting operations.

This graphics chip is mostly used in graphics cards that are separate from the motherboard.

- Intel GMA 3100 series (or equivalent)

This chip is mostly used in the integrated graphics that are built into the motherboards of business computers.

Figuring Out Which Graphics Chip You Have

- Using the System Information dialog

Click StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesSystem ToolsSystem Information to display the System Information dialog box.

From the tree view in the System Information dialog box, select System SummaryComponentsDisplay, and note the value that appears for Adapter Type.

- Using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Note: This method requires that DirectX be installed.

From the Start Menu, choose Run, type dxdiag, and press ENTER to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Select the Display 1 tab and note the value that appears for Chip Type.

Problems with IntelliPoint Compatibility

A bug has been confirmed in environments where IntelliPoint (a Microsoft-manufactured mouse driver) is installed. When using this development tool in DirectX mode, re-rendering a page window illegally overwrites menus and windows.

Sample Case

The following methods have been confirmed to be effective in working around this problem.

  1. Downgrade IntelliPoint to a version earlier than 5.5
  2. Run IntelliPoint in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode

For (1), old versions of IntelliPoint can be downloaded from Microsoft's website.

(Install a version that does not implement the Instant Viewer feature.)

For (2), right-click iPoint.exe and configure its mode from the PropertiesCompatibility tab.
